MUSIC streaming is still years away from "saving" the music industry, Spotify founder Daniel Ek has admitted, but he insisted it was its only hope for growth.

The founder and chief executive of the world's second largest music-streaming service made the comments exclusively to News Corp today after launching Spotify's service for free on smartphones and tablet computers.

The new mobile version of the service will come with catches, however, including listening to ads, only skipping six songs per hour, and being forced to shuffle a playlist's songs when listening on a mobile phone.

Mr Ek announced the new service at a New York event this morning, before telling News Corp music-streaming was still on track to bring revenue back into an industry hit by years of illegal downloads.

Music-streaming services including Spotify, he said, were the industry's only area of growth, as CD sales declined and paid downloads plateaued.

'It's going to take a few years but it's moving very, very fast,' Mr Ek said.

'Already today you can see the music industry is growing again. People are still purchasing tracks but that's not growing any more. Streaming is growing very, very fast - over 100 per cent year on year - and that growth is the thing.'

Mr Ek said Spotify's latest announcement was designed to convince more people to try music streaming by providing songs for free to smartphones and tablets - a service previously reserved for Spotify's premium users paying $11.99 monthly.

Under the new scheme, Spotify users will be able to stream song playlists on tablets and phones in shuffle mode free of charge, and will be able to listen to individual songs on tablets.

Free users will be forced to listen to ads, however, will not be able to download songs for offline listening, and will only be able to skip six songs per hour. Spotify will automatically add tracks to playlists with few songs.

Mr Ek said Spotify added the new service to recruit more users and convert them into subscribers.

'For some people it might be a contradiction but the more we give away, the more likely people are to pay and become Spotify premium customers,' he said.

'We know the more you use it and the more playlists you build, the more likely you are to subscribe.'

Mr Ek said the new service would not affect royalties paid to artists.

'We will still keep paying the same as we always have, but there will be a lot more people experiencing streaming and so a lot more royalties being paid,' he said.

Spotify, like other music-streaming services, has previously come under fire for paying fractions of cents to music labels for use of songs, with Radiohead singer Thom Yorke describing the service as 'the last desperate fart of a dying corpse'.

Spotify argues that the small royalties can add up to substantial payments if there are enough plays of a song.

And streaming services appear to be growing in number both in Australia and overseas, with offerings including Pandora, Rdio, JB Hi-Fi Now, Deezer, Nokia Music, MOG, Rara, Guvera and Songl.

In March, Spotify announced it had 24 million active users, while Pandora boasted 70.9 million active users in October.

Is it possible to stream Spotify on Amazon Kindle Fire for offline listening? The answer is yes. Since Amazon has launched Kindle Fire to enrich users' amusement, a certain group of people has got a piece of the tablet machine at hand. But as Amazon's product does not show friendly attitude to DRM-protected media, it has aroused the confusion whether users can play Spotify on Kindle Fire. Actually, it does, and let's see how's it going on.

Part 1. Amazon Kindle Fire

Spotify Tablet Mode

Originally issued in 2011, Kindle Fire is a laptop-tablet with Android OS in Amazon's series product, with two types available, 7-inch and 8.9-inch. Kindle Fire is more than a digital reader that you can also work it as a mini tablet to appreciate movies, music, news, perform games, communicate with friends, and use office software.

Compared to Kinder Paperwhite, Kindle Fire a little falls short of reading effect but behaves better in reading scanned PDF, full-colored pictures like on magazines, Word document, and note-taking. Besides, it's complained that Fire shares a mere 7.5 battery life and a heavy and clumsy bearing.

Part 2. Normal Way to Play Spotify on Kindle Fire

Usually, Amazon fails to work out those DRM protected files. However, if you prefer to listen to Spotify music on Kindle Fire, a normal way is to install a Spotify app on the tablet. As a laptop tablet, Kindle Fire supports to install some apps or software on it. Once you get Spotify app installed well on Kindle Fire, and log in your account, then you can effortlessly enjoy Spotify songs on Kindle Fire.

That's where the problem kicks in. Spotify Music has been implemented certain protection so that users can play it on Spotify alone. This also explains why the offline music as a cache file cannot be played on other players and will disappear with the subscription ends.
